DALLAS MAVERICKS COME BACK FROM 29 POINTS

The Dallas Mavericks were down by as many as 29 points in the third quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves and came back to win the game 107-100. An improbable victory for the Mavs as they came back from a 70-41 deficit started by a Dirk Nowitzki dunk that led to a 22-2 run to cut the score to 72-63. The Timberwolves are just playing poor basketball this season with a 6-25 record.
LEBRON LOSES ON BIRTHDAY TO THE HEAT

Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat spoil Lebron James’ 24th birthday by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 104-95. LeBron is now 0-3 on his birthday and the Miami Heat continue to beat the elite teams in the NBA since their last victory against the Los Angeles Lakers.

With Steve Nash out with back spasms, Shaquille O’Neal lead the Phoenix Suns past the Oklahoma City Thunder 110-102 with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Shaq says that Phoenix should play more inside-outside ball with more emphasis on playing offense through him. The real question is at this age can Shaq lead this team to the Finals with all the other powerhouse teams like the Lakers around?

RICKY DAVIS SUSPENDED FROM THE NBA
Los Angeles Clippers Ricky Davis has been suspended five games for violating the NBA drug program. The 6-foot-7 swingman is currently recovering from a sore left knee since Nov 22. He has loads of talent but has not been able to make a great impact on any team he has played on.

After the emotional high of winning 19 straight games and starting with the best NBA record 27-2, the Boston Celtics lost of two straight games with their uncharacteristic loss to the Golden State Warriors 99-89. However, they bounced back nicely from the embarrassing loss to dominate the Sacramento Kings 108-63.
CAVS STAY PERFECT AT HOME

The Cleveland Cavaliers are dominating at home with a 16-0 record after they beat the Miami Heat 96-83 to move to 26-4 this season. The Cavs clamped down on defense in the fourth quarter to limit the Heat to only 19 points and LeBron James scored 33 in the game to lead his team to victory.

Here’s a player who values winning above anything. Star Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki told the Dallas Morning News that he would be willing to take a pay cut in 2010 to help the team nab another marquee player. Remember, 2010 is the big year for free agents, including Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and of course, LeBron James. He said that after winning the MVP, there’s nothing left to win individually except for the championship. It’s refreshing to see a player of that caliber with that attitude. Although it’s not clear how that’s going to help Dallas’ woes in the mean time.

That probably wasn’t what the New Orleans Hornets were expecting with their first Christmas Day game. Chris Paul said he was embarrassed by the 88-68 thrashing by the Orlando Magic. With all the talk of the big three teams, the Magic deserve some props were having the fourth-best record and topping solid teams like the Hornets, and the Los Angeles Lakers. With a stud like Dwight Howard, it’s easy to see how.

So much for that hiccup. After two consecutive losses and a mediocre win over Memphis, the Los Angeles Lakers beat the New Orleans Hornets 100-87 in convincing fashion. Is this proof they are ready to play against the elite teams in the league? Time will tell. This win helps build momentum as the Lakers head into Christmas Day with a rematch against the Boston Celtics.

Jason Kidd fans in Dallas might be disappearing after the 121-97 shredding of the Mavericks by the New Jersey Nets. Key to the victory is Nets point guard Devon Harris, now one of the premiere players in the league. Fox Sports’ Charley Rosen calls the trade an “ummitigated disaster.” Harsh words, but not untrue. He goes on to dissect the Mavericks’ lack of defense, and notes that while Kidd had a solid game, he couldn’t contain Harris.

This year LeBron James has taken his defense to another level as he led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 99-90 win over the Houston Rockets. The defensive play of the game came when James had a momentum-shifting block against Yao Ming. The Celtics and Lakers should be aware as the Cavaliers have proven themselves to be one of the top three teams this year.

The matchup between fellow Chinese players New Jersey Nets Yi Jianlian and Houston Rockets Yao Ming was a snooze as the Rockets blew out the Nets 114-91. Still, the game meant a lot to the NBA. Bringing in an global audience, this game was televised live on China’s largest television network.
