WEEKLY ROUNDUP: 3/21- 3/27
March 27, 2009 by Andy Socrates
Shaq Twittering
Shaq leads the Twitter movement, including sending tweets during the halftime break in the middle of a game between the Phoenix Suns and the Washington Wizards. Coaches may not understand Twitter, but they should allow players to do what they want during halftime. Some players listen to their iPods, others review game tape, so why not Twitter?
Living Up To A Legend
Jeff Jordan, Michael Jordan’s eldest son, plays for the Illinois team and constantly gets teased on his team for his dad’s legacy. It’s a lot of pressure to try to live up to your dad’s reputation especially when he is the greatest basketball player ever to play the game. It’s been a tough road for Jeff to come into his own but he’s come to learn how to live under the spotlight of his dad’s shadow.
Living Up To A Legend, Part 2
It seems like this week is all about Jordan’s sons. Jordan celebrates with tears as his other son Marcus leads his high school prep team to a championship. Marcus hit four clutch free throws down the stretch in helping his team win 69-66.
LeBron James Has Best Season Ever
According to John Hollinger, James is having one of the most efficient seasons ever, even coming close to matching Jordan’s PER. Clearly, James is this season’s MVP leading his team to the NBA’s best record and perhaps to Cleveland’s first NBA championship. We are all witnesses.
College Coaches Need To Know Their Roles
The college and NBA game are two different beasts and coaches should know their roles, according to Fox Sports’ Charley Rosen. The main difference between the two leagues is that college is a coach’s league and the NBA is a player’s league. Coaches need to be master psychologists in the NBA. Phil Jackson is the best example.
Former Cavs GM Waxes Poetic
Former Cavaliers General Manager Wayne Embry has high hopes for this year’s Cavs team as they look to break the 60-win mark this season, which would set a new standard for the franchise. This may be the year that Cavs fans overcome the disappointment of the past, including heartbreak at the hands of Jordan, and watch their own “23″ lead his team to the promised land.
Utah Jazz Welcomes London Visit
Teams usually hate traveling overseas to play exhibition games, but Andrei Kirilenko welcomes the chance to play in London. He’ll get his wish next pre-season against the Chicago Bulls. It’s a continued initiative by the NBA to promote the game overseas and allows David Stern to do research on the possibility of a European league. More games should be played overseas considering it takes the same time to fly from New York to Los Angeles as it is to fly to London.
Garnett Still Uncomfortable
Kevin Garnett has been playing limited minutes since his return to the Boston Celtics. The bottom line is that Doc Rivers wants his players to be healthy come playoff time and could care less about home court advantage. The Celtics will be a force to reckoned with no matter where they play. For now, Garnett is still uneasy in his transition back to the team.
