IVERSON’S FALL FROM GRACE
October 20, 2009 by Andy Socrates · 1 Comment
It’s been over 10 years since I’ve watched Allen Iverson enter the league. Here was a skinny 6 0 shooting guard who would take on the giant size men of the NBA with reckless abandon and dominate. It was awe inspiring to watch him play on the court dazzling us with his killer crossover and unstoppable quickness. Read more

The best news for the Los Angeles Lakers this week is that Lamar Odom will be back to help defend the championship. It was a long drawn out contract negotiation but now that things are finalized he will be a huge boon for the team. The Lakers are still the best team in the league and looks like they have a superb opportunity to repeat.

It’s been a whirlwind week with multiple teams making drastic moves to catch up to the Los Angeles Lakers. The dream match-up in the Finals with Kobe Bryant playing against LeBron James and former teammate Shaquille O’Neal may become a reality come next season. It’s been a busy draft day and it seems the teams that benefited the most so far has been the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic. Expect more drastic moves this summer. Kobe Bryant vs LeBron James is still a possible Finals match-up as the Cavs score a Game 5 victory to keep the team alive. Expect the Cavs series to go the distance in seven games and the Los Angeles Lakers to close out the Nuggets in Denver in Game 6. Nike is still hoping for a Finals matchup as they continue to promote their Most Valuable Puppet commercials with Kobe and LeBron.

Shaquille O’Neal has played pretty well for a 37-year-old. He showed nimbleness this season, as well as in the NBA All-Star game where he won Co-MVP with Kobe Bryant. Now through Twitter he’s been hinting that he wants to be traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Shaq still have one to two years left in his career but will only be effective on a championship-contending team who needs a role player like the Los Angeles Lakers or Cleveland Cavaliers. He won’t be much use to a rebuilding Dallas Mavericks. Read more

Shaq Twittering
Shaq leads the Twitter movement, including sending tweets during the halftime break in the middle of a game between the Phoenix Suns and the Washington Wizards. Coaches may not understand Twitter, but they should allow players to do what they want during halftime. Some players listen to their iPods, others review game tape, so why not Twitter? Read more

OTHERS WEIGH IN ON LACK OF BIG MEN
February 12, 2009 by R.C. Cola · Leave a Comment
Fox Sports’ Randy Hill notes the lack of quality centers in the league. He notes that while a rare breed, big men are still necessary for a team to go all the way. In the last 18 championships, 11 have featured a future Hall of Famer at center. Only the Detroit Pistons and the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls won rings without a dominant big man. He also bemoans the lack of a strong post game with younger players, noting the New Orleans Hornets’ Tyson Chandler was content to dunk off of rebounds and block shots in his high school days. The piece follows Ball or Die’s own feature on the same issue.

Kobe Bryant is coming off of a record 61-point performance at Madison Square Garden. Shaquille O’Neal has defied expectations and criticism to put up 17.5 points and nine rebounds. Both are headed to the All-Star game this weekend, to be coached by Phil Jackson in a Los Angeles Lakers dynasty reunion. All we need is Rick Fox, Derek Fisher and Robert Horry and we’d be set. REGGIE MILLER RIPS GARDEN FANS
February 4, 2009 by Andy Socrates · Leave a Comment
Reggie Miller, formerly of the Indiana Pacers, now sportscaster rips New York Knick fans for chanting “MVP” during Kobe Bryant’s 61 point outburst. Justin Terranova of the New York Post agrees with Miller’s comments. Back then, the New York Knicks were championship contenders but could never get over the hump because of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Times have changed for the Knicks, and the once storied franchise is trying to get its glitter back now with Mike D’Antoni’s system. There just hasn’t been much to cheer about the past few years and having Kobe bring some excitement into the Garden is not something Miller should rip Knick fans for wanting.
