SUPERSTARS WHO MAY GET SHUT OUT

July 14, 2009 by Andy Socrates · Leave a Comment

The ’90s were dominated by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. During Jordan’s reign of terror, countless future Hall of Famers had their chances to win a championship ring foiled. Only during Jordan’s brief retirement did Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets win two titles. Among the greats that had their hearts broken by Jordan were Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller and Karl Malone. Read more

NBA ROUNDUP: 6/20 - 6/26

June 26, 2009 by Andy Socrates · 1 Comment

It’s been a whirlwind week with multiple teams making drastic moves to catch up to the Los Angeles Lakers. The dream match-up in the Finals with Kobe Bryant playing against LeBron James and former teammate Shaquille O’Neal may become a reality come next season. It’s been a busy draft day and it seems the teams that benefited the most so far has been the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic. Expect more drastic moves this summer. For LeBron James, the 2008-2009 season was one of extremes. From a dominating roll through the regular season, to the sudden crash after hitting a brick wall that were the Orlando Magic, James and his squad went from dominant to devastated in a flash. Read more

NBA ROUNDUP: 6/6 - 6/12

June 12, 2009 by Andy Socrates · Leave a Comment

The Los Angeles Lakers like to win; they just don’t like to take the easy road. After letting a chance slip away to go up 3-0, the Lakers have redeemed themselves and find themselves in a position to close the series in Orlando on Sunday. Don’t expect to see that happen, since Kobe wants to win his first title without Shaq at home. Read more

The Orlando Magic traveled a rough road back to Amway Arena, now staring at a two-game deficit after a heartbreaking overtime loss in Game 2. Coach Stan Van Gundy needs to make some key adjustments if he wants the Magic to win their first Finals game and make this series a bit more interesting. Read more

SUPERMAN FACES THE A-BOMB IN NBA FINALS

June 4, 2009 by B. C. · Leave a Comment

It is universally acknowledged that any team in the hunt for an NBA championship needs a solid big man as the centerpiece of the team. In fact, the only NBA champions over the last 20 years without a dominating center or power forward were the Chicago Bulls (led by a pretty good player) and the Detroit Pistons (an amazingly balanced team). Besides those two exceptions, every other championship team has featured players such as Hakeem Olajuwan, Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal, or Kevin Garnett as one of the top two players on the team. NEW YORKERS REJOICE

June 1, 2009 by R.C. Cola · Leave a Comment

There are a boatload of people bemoaning the lack of a Kobe Bryant-LeBron James match-up in the NBA Finals: the citizens of Cleveland, basketball fans, LeBron worshipers, and even David Stern. Outside of Orlando, there’s one city toasting the downfall of the King: New York. Read more

CAVS COMEBACK?

May 28, 2009 by Andy Socrates · Leave a Comment

The Cleveland Cavaliers are down 3-1, much to the shock and dismay of fans, sponsors, and David Stern. Historically, of the 190 teams that are up 3-1 in a playoff series, 182 of them (or 95.6 percent) have won.But there is still hope for MVP LeBron James and the Cavs to pull off an improbable comeback in the next three games. ARE THE LAKERS LAST YEAR’S CELTICS?

There is too much negative press for a Los Angeles Lakers team that went 65-17 in the regular season and finished with the second best record in the league behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. Read more

NBA ROUNDUP: 5/16 - 5/22

May 22, 2009 by Andy Socrates · Leave a Comment

So the Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t invincible after all. They definitely lost some of their luster in losing to the Orlando Magic 107-106 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. LeBron James tapped his entire arsenal, scoring 49 points on 20-30 shooting from the field but could not come up during the clutch to win the game. On the other hand, Kobe Bryant is still the best closer in the game scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lakers over the Nuggets 105-103 in Game 1. Game 2 was a different story. THE NICK ANDERSON EFFECT

May 7, 2009 by Andy Socrates · 1 Comment

During my three-on-three league game last week, I pulled a “Nick Anderson.” My team was down by one point, and I had four opportunities at the free throw line to tie the game. I missed each shot by inches as it painfully rolled off the rim. I tried to ignore the grimace from my teammates. Read more

NBA ROUNDUP: 4/25 - 5/1

May 1, 2009 by Andy Socrates · Leave a Comment

The Cleveland Cavaliers showed why they had the best record in the NBA by easily sweeping the Detroit Pistons in the first round. The presumptive favorites, the Los Angeles Lakers, failed to look anything like a championship contender by blowing huge leads to the Utah Jazz before finishing them off. The San Antonio Spurs were shocked by the Dallas Mavericks and it’s Tim Duncan’s first ever playoff exit in the first round. Look for an exciting series to go seven between the Mavs and Denver Nuggets. Read more

CAVALIERS KRYPTONITE

April 21, 2009 by Andy Socrates · 2 Comments

So everyone assumes the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers are on a collision course for the Finals. But unlike popular opinion, it’s not going to be a cakewalk for either team. Both have shown they are vulnerable to certain match-ups, despite what their dominating records may suggest. Today, we look at the biggest hurdle for the Cavs: Read more

TOP NBA GAMES: 4/6 - 4/12

April 6, 2009 by B. C. · Leave a Comment

Last week I wrote about the decline of the Detroit Pistons. This week, I noticed that the Pistons and the Denver Nuggets have essentially switched places in their respective conferences’ playoff standings. The Pistons were the No. 2 seed heading into the playoffs a year ago while the Nuggets were eighth. Currently, the Nuggets are the two seed and the Pistons are eighth. So, is there anyone out there who still thinks that Allen Iverson is a better point guard than Chauncey Billups? Read more

TOP NBA GAMES: 3/23 - 3/29

March 23, 2009 by B. C. · Leave a Comment

I just checked the NBA playoff standings and something immediately caught my eye. The Charlotte Bobcats are only a game behind the Chicago Bulls for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference! Much of their success this season must be attributed to coach Larry Brown, who is working his magic yet again by taking another underdog team and turning them into a playoff contender. This makes me wonder how truly dysfunctional a team the New York Knicks must have been that he was only able to muster up 23 wins despite a roster full of talent. What a waste.

Paul Pierce and Bruce BowenDid you see the numbers LeBron James posted this past week? Three straight triple-doubles and a 51 point outburst against the Sacramento Kings. The guy is insane. Now, being a Lakers fan, I root against him every chance I get. But even I can’t deny that we’re all witnesses to something truly special here. Oh yeah, he’s still only 24 years old. Read more

TOP NBA GAMES: 3/9 - 3/15

Shaq is feuding with an ex-coach and an All-Star caliber ex-teammate. Sound familiar? In Orlando, it was coach Brian Hill and Penny Hardaway. With the Lakers, it was Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant. This past week, Shaq exchanged words with former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy and former wingman Dwayne Wade.
